Generalist World is a unique community in the networking landscape, challenging the idea of specialised and pigeon holed roles. While these roles are still relevant and often necessary in many industries, they can miss out on the opportunities that a broader skillset brings.
It’s not the tired ‘jack of all trades’ conversation, it’s acknowledging that people can be a more fluid participant in an organisation by having both specialised skills and general capabilities that fill gaps and solve problems.
“You’re not scattered. You’re multi-dimensional. Build a career that (finally) fits the shape of you.” Generalist World
Generalist World is a place to explore these ideas, as well as how you perceive yourself and concurrently, how you present yourself to the world. And that’s a great journey for individual growth.

Generalist World attracts a collaborative, inquisitive and empathetic cohort – people who recognise the rewarding personal journey of discovery that Generalist World delivers, and want to contribute to the collective growth of the community. Wall to wall sharers and carers. Borderline cult material but so far so good.
Hothouse Magazine attended Generalist World’s most recent event, which addressed the topic ‘the Future of Work’. Facilitated by Melbourne lead Melanie Calleja and assisted by Skye Bennett, the session consisted of 10 curated ‘conversationalists’ running mini panels sharing insights, opinions and theories from diverse lived experiences and vocational backgrounds.

Generalist World events thrive in the inclusivity of their discussions. Overwhelmingly, generalists appear to turn up with an equal measure of insights to share, and ears to listen with. The beauty of this community is being able to bring the confidence of your opinion, alongside the humility to allow yourself to be proven wrong. The conversations were robust, respectful and inclusive.
“It was everything you’d expect from a room full of generalists, with conversations ranging from how work has changed since 2020, what counts as a tech start-up, sustainability, the concept of time, whether AI will destroy the world and how to create community in a world designed for loneliness.” Jess Price – Paradigm Makers
