Play For The Planet
In collaboration with the University of Melbourne, student representative Sholilah Rahmatunnisa Utami and games creator David Wright, Hothouse Studio launched the University of Melbourne’s first student-run environmental games library.

The
challenge

When faced with a challenge as vast as climate change, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed—paralysis often follows alarmist discourse, leaving people feeling powerless rather than empowered. But what if climate adaptation could be approached differently? What if, instead of fear and helplessness, we harnessed creativity, collaboration, and even joy? This is where play comes in. Climate change adaptation is inherently about problem-solving – navigating disruptions, making decisions under uncertainty, and fostering resilience. Games, by their very nature, help us practice these skills in engaging, low-risk environments.

Our
solution

To counter climate anxiety and feelings of paralysis, we created a free and accessible games library to inspire environmental awareness, collaboration, and action. The library will serve as a hub for creative engagement exploring cooperative play, systems thinking, and collective problem solving.

A safe space for dangerous ideas
Hothouse respectfully acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, waters and skies where we live, work and create. We pay our respect to ancestors and Elders, past and present and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ unique cultural and spiritual relationships to the land, waters and seas and their rich contribution to our precious planet. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
