Eating fresh produce is becoming a luxury for the rich. Get some control by growing yourself or in community gardens

The problem

Fresh food shouldn't be a luxury. And we’d probably all have much better access to it if not for the supermarket duopoly. In Australia, the big two supermarkets, Coles and Woolworths have control over 65% - 67% of the grocery market. And price gouging is perfectly legal. This means that without competition Australians pay through the roof for groceries, farmers receive smaller and smaller cuts, and the supermarket CEOs take home multi-million dollar pay packages.

The solution

Breaking free from the grip of the big two and growing your own veggies, (even just with some homegrown tomatoes!) is great for your hip pocket and for your mental health. There are also a ton of incredible farmers markets where you can cut out the middle man, and buy direct from the source, noting not everyone can afford this luxury. Community gardens are also an amazing way to take some autonomy back and reconnect with the rhythms of nature and your local community, especially for those without access to a private plot of dirt.
